CRC Spotlight: Electric Boilers for the Energy Transition

26/04/29: The combination of an electric boiler and a heat storage tank is a highly efficient, technically mature solution for decarbonization. It transforms the heating sector from a purely passive energy consumer into a flexible player within the smart grid.
By optimizing operating strategies using predictive algorithms (MPC – Model Predictive Control) that incorporate weather and electricity price forecasts, heat generation can take place during low-price periods or when electricity prices are negative. In combination with thermal energy storage systems, electric boilers can thus generate heat cost-effectively while simultaneously helping to stabilize the power grids.
Due to the expansion of renewable energies, a further increase in negative electricity prices is expected in the coming years. Forecasts indicate that in Germany, negative electricity prices are already expected on 100–120 days (approx. 1,000 operating hours) per year over the next 3 to 5 years. To make effective use of these periods, electric and electrode boilers are a key component of the energy transition. In industries with high air treatment requirements (semiconductors, pharmaceuticals), electric boilers combined with thermal storage can make a significant contribution to CO2 reduction (power-to-heat).
